Why do we do what we do? So many say that they do it for the money, but I don’t buy it – not for a second. That’s the less-than-thought-out, shallow response. Aren’t we all looking for something more purposeful and meaningful – real success and a legacy that we can be proud of? I know I am!
But how do we achieve that kind of success? After all, if we do that, the money always follows! At least in my own personal experience.
What WILL lead to that success and a legacy that matters, is becoming the leader who has taken the time to connect with their True North and intentionally follows the guidance that comes from that place. The greatest results, results that really matter, come from purposely driven leadership. That’s the truth.
If you are a leader who wants to leave a real legacy, you must take the time to dig deep and connect with your True North. That is what will make a purposeful impact on your life and the lives of others.
You’re probably asking, “what is True North?”
Your True North is your internal compass. It represents your humanness at its deepest level. Your True North orients you towards what is most important to you. It’s grounded in your core values, purpose, passions, and internal motivations. It’s the foundation upon which you build your most satisfying life. It is the reason you do what you do every day!
As a leadership coach and guide I take my clients on a journey to help them discover their True North. I do this because I have learned through my own journey that when you know with certainty the deeper meaning and purpose behind your actions, choices, and behaviors, you begin to lead more authentically and that will influence the outcome of your life story in the best way.
Your True North is that inner calling that keeps you on the path towards your authentic self. Once you connect with your truth, you will not waver. You will work with conviction towards what you believe in most. You will never lose sight of that bigger picture and you’ll know that any obstacle that gets in your way is just a temporary setback or purposeful redirection to ensure you don’t lose your day. When you are clear about your True North, there is no quitting, no giving up. AND it’s not about the money. It’s only about keeping your eye on the goal you want to accomplish and persevering until you get there.
Discovering your True North does not happen in a few leadership coaching sessions. It takes a lifetime of commitment to growth and learning. The beginning of the True North journey begins with you realizing the narrative of your story and connecting it to your truth.
Begin to discover your True North.
Consider the following questions:
In your early years who had the greatest impact on you and how does that influence affect you and your choices today?
Starting with your earliest memories, what experiences did you have that you would describe as defining moments – the moments that continue to resonate today and impact who you are?
What patterns in your early life story, with people, events, or experiences, have had the greatest impact on you and your life now?
As you contemplate the answers to these questions you may notice your truths are revealed and your unique life story becomes clearer. Your True North will begin to emerge.
