It’s a wonderful time of year! But here is my question, in the midst of the hustle and bustle do you take time to experience moments of awe and wonder? Do you take the pause necessary to be moved to emotions? In case you don’t know what it means to experience awe and wonder, it’s the feeling of surprise caused by something beautiful, it is to think, to ponder, it is a moment that challenges your understanding of the world.
I have always been a curious person who seeks moments of awe and wonder.
I love having the unexpected experience of deep emotion that moves me to become filled with joy and love. You do not always know when these moments will strike but when it does you must pause and allow the feelings to wash over you.
I love spending time thinking, pondering, and looking beyond the obvious. I allow myself to get caught up in experiences that move me. Sure, it’s easier to take what you see and hear for face value. I could stay distracted by the busyness of life and just keep moving. But my curiosity and seeking moments that move me have changed my life. They have enlightened my soul to the things that are meaningful and purposeful. They have helped me to be a better person and coach. The experience of awe and wonder takes me on a journey beyond the obvious to experience a deeper, more meaningful perspective.
My most recent moments of awe and wonder did not happen over this holiday season, but instead during the month of July. There were two distinct moments that are etched into my memory forever. If you are a regular reader of my blogs, you know that I frequent the Mountains of Montana. One of the most majestic places, if you haven’t been there you must go.

This past year @Brian Kempisty (friend and colleague) bought a farm in Paradise Valley, MT previously owned by the last Jim Harrison (Author of Legends of the Fall). This is one of the few places that I have been where I could feel a distinct soul and spiritual energy. It did not matter where I sat, I was surrounded by a view that mesmerized me and filled my heart with joy (picture shown of the real purple mountains majesty). I felt cradled and held by this deep comforting energy. The only way I can explain it is tranquility and calm. I wanted to stay forever.
My first moment of awe and wonder was with the animals.
Brian’s farm has many soulful animals and a couple that truly touched my heart. Anchor and Red, two spirit-filled horses enriched my soul. I remember one distinct evening when I was enjoying a glass of wine and the gentle night air with the horses. Anchor and Red literally, snuggled up and put their heads on my shoulder and lap as if to tell me we are here for you. Their energy filled the air and my heart. This experience of awe and wonder made me realize the gentle kindness an animal can offer just when you need it most. Animals cannot use words, but they can exude energy you feel so distinctly it stays with you forever. It was as if Anchor and Red soothed my soul that night.
My second moment of awe and wonder was the day of our annual hike.
It was on my birthday which I loved. I turned 52 this year and I was so happy to be spending my day hiking the Montana mountains. Every chance I got I would pause and take it all in. I was moved to tears and filled with gratitude because of the beauty, experience, and wonderment I saw that day.
The end of a year means new beginnings. New beginnings mean new opportunities. Don’t miss out on the moments that elicit deep emotions that challenge the way you experience the world. Don’t allow the busyness of life to distract you. Purposely enjoy the moments of awe and wonder you are about to experience this year because they will take you on a journey that will change your heart and your mind.
