What Does Work-Life Balance Really Mean?

There is a lot of talk about work-life balance today, but what does that actually mean and how does it benefit you? For me work-life balance starts with being very clear on what is important to you. And knowing what you aim to achieve in this lifetime. Being very clear about what you really want to do will help you to know if the notion of work-life balance will get you to where you want to go.

I have always been an overachiever and grew up believing you must work hard to achieve anything worthwhile. Throughout the course of my career some of the most successful people I have met did not seek work-life balance but instead strive to work hard to achieve greatness. In my mind anything worthwhile is going to take effort, commitment, and work.

Please understand achieving greatness is not for everybody, but if that is your goal it may not always align with the idea of work-life balance. I would like to explain that I am not suggesting you neglect your mind, body, and spirit or your family. But know that leaving a legacy and positively impacting the world around you will take more than simply pursuing balance.

In my experience there are a few things I know with certainty. You need a plan and detailed goals to help you execute on that plan. Then there is the part about hard work, perseverance, and grit.  Achieving greatness or at minimum standing out among the rest will not happen between the hours of 9-5.

So, the first step is to figure out what you want to achieve in this lifetime and make a detailed plan. Then ask yourself if that goal aligns with balancing your work and life. Or does your vision require that you find a way to work hard to successfully accomplish what is meaningful to you so you can enjoy your life?

Work-life balance can still be achieved by someone who chooses to work hard to accomplish their goals. So many people have different views on what work-life balance means for them, and it doesn’t always align from one person to another.

I believe that work can be enjoyable and can naturally provide balance. Its starts with discovering what lights you up.
